Communication skills

Those who were campaigning for English competency for doctors from the European Union (EU) might like to know that this is being actively considered.1 Our view is that this should be dealt with from the perspective of patient safety and not used as a tool against people with different accents, whether European or Asian. We should also guard against attempts at further divisions among international medical graduates (IMGs) and European ones. The establishment has already succeeded in creating deep divisions between first and second generation Asians, and now I have a feeling they are trying to do the same between EU doctors and other IMGs. Several studies have shown that racial discrimination may extend far beyond the first generation and there may be issues that selectively affect all IMGs, irrespective of race. We should be flexible enough to encompass all these strands and make clear that Asian IMGs are not against EU doctors. {blacksquare}

Voices Of UKAID

I am confident that mature, alert and careful membership of our organisation will always be on their toes to differentiate between right & wrong and democratic way of working. This is only because of free and open forum like this one could get their views known to the wider group-Rajneesh Walia Consultant Paediatrician Executive committee member UKAID&acting General Secretary

The Core principle during the formation of this group were to encourage a grass
movement amongst common IMGs and encourage them to think and choose
for themselves –Prabakar Nayak SPR Birmingham Executive committee member

Let’s all collectively work for the common welfare of all IMG's
as we  have been doing –Shebu Lukose Staff Grade Executive committee member

In this day and age, racism is not contempt for a particular race,
but a process to subjugate a person through systematic means,
constantly. Whatever the method used, and howsoever sophisticated and
euphemistic they have become over the years, the end result is the
same - mental harassment through a collective game, bending the rules
of the game as per whim and an invisible glass ceiling_Rajat Joshi UKAID Forum

Knowledge is in itself an exportable skill and anything one does can be honed whereever they are.

Be it football or otherwise all every one would like is a level playing field, isn’t it?

It is fairness in a society that matters, isn’t it? -Narender TS in UKAID Forum

I have a feeling that some how the whole system of medical training and Doctors training has been under mined. I always feel nothing is permanent - and as Doctors we should be ready to work any where in the world and for that you need to have your training suitable to any place in the world - But here, if you become a breast surgeon or a prostate surgeon - where on earth would be able to go survive or make a living other than in UK. _Eswar UKAID Forum

Regardless of what we discuss, we should not forget that we are trying to give our colleagues a 'fishing rod' rather than catching the fish for them as it were. There are many IMGs ignorant of services and contacts UKAID can provide in order to help them –Ajay Bagga SHO Executive committee member

I guess we need to challenge these rules in principle, we may or may not
succeed, but we definitely need to expand to be able to raise our voices at
the right time and be heard. Maybe we'll be able to stop further injustice
to our people-Abhinav Gulihar SHO UKAID Forum

Hope, some day there will be democracy in EMD organisations and people will be chosen by what they have done and not on the basis of with whom they are connected to. The wine and dine policy needs to be condemned.-Sah Ritesh Executive committee member General Secretary

we are part of the workforce, we are part of the family...what affects us affects men too...and our kids....and above all we are part of the team...and for those that have been on any team building exercise will tell u that the key to good team work and play is good communication-Anjie Doshani Executive committee member UKAID

is genuine from the request for membership as anybody can give any

all want at the end of that period. If you have objections please feel
free to let me know. This is your list and we will publish everything

WE are invited again to join the diversity forum

Dear DR Jayaprakash Gosalakkal

Invitation to Join the NHS Employers' NHS Diversity Forum

Further to our recent correspondence, I am writing to you as a valued supporter of the work of NHS Employers in the area of equality and diversity for the last two years. As such, I would very much like you to become a member of the newly constituted NHS Diversity Forum. We are looking for this group to help inform and shape our work programme for the organisation over the next three years.

If you are able to accept this invitation, I would be grateful if you could write to me confirming this .

The other reason for me writing - following on from this -  is to inform you that the next meeting of the NHS Diversity Forum  will be on 14th September 2007. The two main items on this agenda will be detailed feedback from our recent survey of over 175 NHS trusts on their equality and diversity requirements and a presentation from a member of the Discrimination Law Review team. The meeting will be in our London offices from 10.30am until 12.30pm.

I hope that this gives you sufficient information for now on our plans for the next phase of this group - and I look forward to hearing from you and seeing you on 14th September 2007.

Yours sincerely,

Sian Thomas

Deputy Director

I HAVE A DREAM: NO RACISM IN THE NHS

Dr. Jayaprakash Gosalakkal a consultant neurologist from Leicester writes about subtle racism in his thought-provoking letter published in BMA News of 10 July.” Overt racism has to a large extend been eliminated by the majesty of law and the efforts of good people. But subtle racism can have equally depressing effect.”

He gives some examples:

  • Ignoring some people in a meeting while lavishly praising others-often without basis.
  • Using criteria often other than obvious merit in giving promotions. This can often be so subtle that it is impossible to prove to any degree of legal certainty
  • Using threats of disciplinary action to mute the more vociferous, while rewarding more compliant with merit awards and positions on committees.

Dr. Gosalakkal says “Fortunately for all of us, there are enough good people willing to take a stand and be counted. Martin Luther King’s desire that his children be judged on the content of their character rather than the colour of their skin may yet become a reality in the modern NHS.” He remains optimistic.
